The nandu also occurs in the wild in northern Germany. As an exotic species, the nandu became feral in the Wakenitz reserve in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern between Schattin (village in the municipality of Lüdersdorf), Utecht and Rieps. Around the year 2000, a number of animals escaped there from a free-range holding.
