Productinformation
Beautiful skull of a pelican.
Species: Pelecanidae
Origin: Africa
Pelicans are piscivorous and eat mainly fish, but in times of food shortage, there have also been cases of pelicans eating the chicks of gannets. It was thought in ancient and medieval times that the pelican could bring dead young back to life with its blood. The mother pelican would rip open its own breast to feed its blood to its chicks. This popular belief arose because the pelican has a long bill and a throat pouch from which it feeds the young with semi-digested food that is red in colour. Certain pelicans therefore have a red spot on crop and throat pouch during breeding season that resembles a bleeding wound.
